Renovation vs. New? Evaluating which is best for you…

Are you thinking of renovating your home? Often one of the first questions we find that comes up is if a remodel is worth it to get the results you want, or if starting from scratch with a new build is a better option. Here are a few questions to ask yourself that will help make your decision a little bit clearer.

Timeline

In terms of timeline, renovating a home can be a large undertaking and is a big time commitment. Depending on the scale of the reno, it can be inconvenient to either live within a construction zone or temporarily relocate. It’s important to be aware of this before you make the decision to start construction, so you know what to expect going into it! There are scenarios where moving into a new home can have a faster timeline.

Space

What are the aspects of your current home that you want to change? Are they realistic for a renovation? Typically, there is only so much you can do with an existing structure, so if you are hoping for a major change it may be beneficial to look into something new.

Location

If you have fallen in love with your community and your neighbours have practically become family, then a renovation may be the way to go! When buying a new home you have to consider that those aspects of your lifestyle will change as well. While you can purchase a new home in a mature neighbourhood, many new builds are located in areas that may not be fully developed yet.

Budget

Having a realistic budget is a big factor in this decision. Anyone that has some experience in a renovation knows that it’s rare for things to go perfectly to plan. Especially with older homes, there can be additional costs that pop up as you get further into the reno. Having a flexible budget is important. On the other hand, if your budget is more fixed, a new home may be the way to go!
