Architectural Technologist

Urbis Infill Homes (Urbis) is expanding its Design Team by adding a creative and experienced Architectural Technologist with a passion for custom residential design.  Working closely with experienced Design Lead Katie Warwa (Masters of Architecture Graduate), and under the mentorship of Architect Rick Arndt (Retired, Life Member), this role will collaborate fully in the design process and lead the technical aspects of the design concept, including the architectural details and construction drawings.  This role will approach each project with a critical technical eye to ensure it meets the current construction applications, building codes, and bylaw requirements.  The Architectural Technologist will work closely with all Team members on the successful and quality execution of all design and construction projects.

This is either a full-time position, located in Urbis’s Edmonton office location, or an option to be a remote hybrid or contract position.

Day to Day Accountabilities:

  • Develop architectural designs using manual drawing methods and design software programs.

  • Develop 3D virtual models of architectural designs.

  • Complete CAD drawings and documents for design presentations to clients and for the submission of development and building permits.

  • Manage energy modelling to ensure alignment with energy goals, including Energuide rating as required for building permits submissions.

  • Review and coordinate structural components including layouts for electrical and HVAC systems.

  • Work closely with the Construction Team to review and coordinate 3rd party shop drawings (window/door packages, truss drawings, structural drawings) with construction activities.

  • Work closely with the Interior Designer to coordinate architectural drawings with the interior design, as it is completed.

  • Maintain proficiency in construction products, techniques, and sequences by staying current on product developments, new materials, code changes, and current industry trends.

The Right Person Will Have:

  • Architectural Technology Diploma, registered technologist preferred.

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in residential architectural drawings, construction document preparation, and field observation in a residential application.

  • Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft 365 and design software programs (Revit, AutoCAD, Sketchup, and Enscape or other rendering software) and able to translate architectural drawings into 3D renderings and fly throughs.

  • Competent knowledge of the use of zoning, building codes, and other regulations, including working within the Mature Neighbourhood Overlay.

  • Experienced in the requirements for development and building permit submissions.

  • Competent knowledge of residential construction materials, specifications, and methodologies.

  • Experience dealing with government agencies on building codes and ordinances.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a focus on effective collaboration.
